balbina and uatumã river — presidente figueiredo
Hydroelectric lake with thousands of islands and dead trees, about 3 hours from Manaus. Plenty of açu peacock bass, with road access.
The Balbina lake flooded the forest and left a maze of islands, dead trees and channels. The water is dark and clear, ideal for surface fishing. The açu is the star, with many medium-sized fish and a chance at a trophy. Below the dam, the Uatumã River runs with current and good beaches in low water. The big advantage is logistics: you can drive from Manaus. Fish with a guide, because it's easy to get lost among the islands and submerged trees break propellers.
best season
Lower water in the lake and river, September to January.
Local rules: The Uatumã Biological Reserve borders the lake: fishing is banned inside it. Downriver, the Uatumã RDS has a fishing agreement and catch-and-release areas. Respect the dam's safety zone. Check local rules.
