rio negro — novo airão
Blackwater three hours from Manaus, beside the Anavilhanas archipelago. Peacock bass in the lakes and igarapés outside the park.
Novo Airão is the town closest to Manaus with the look of the upper Rio Negro: blackwater, beaches in the dry season, and a maze of islands, lakes and igarapés. Across from town lies Anavilhanas National Park, one of the largest river archipelagos in the world, and upriver, Jaú National Park. Sport fishing takes place outside the parks, in the lakes and igarapés along the banks, for peacock bass, aruanã, cachorra and bicuda. It is a good option for those with few days who want to fish blackwater without taking a plane.
best season
Dry season on the lower Rio Negro, September to December.
Local rules: Anavilhanas National Park and Jaú National Park are strictly protected: fishing is not open inside them and depends on the management plan and ICMBio authorization. In Amazonas, açu peacock bass is catch and release only, and live bait is prohibited for peacock bass (Lei AM 6.647/2023, with Lei 7.208/2024). Closed season from Nov 15 to Mar 15 for the species in Annex II of Portaria Ibama 48/2007. Check local rules.
