são francisco mouth — piaçabuçu

Where the Velho Chico meets the sea, between the dunes of Alagoas and Sergipe. Snook and tarpon in the estuary.

The São Francisco ends between Piaçabuçu, in Alagoas, and Brejo Grande, in Sergipe, in an estuary of dunes, islands, mangroves and a lighthouse swallowed by the sea. With flow reduced by the dams, the sea pushes further upriver each year. Fishing is estuarine: snook along the edges and sandbanks, tarpon in the deep channels, pescada-amarela and crevalle jack near the bar. Boat trips to the mouth leave from Piaçabuçu and pair well with the fishing.

Local rules: The mouth lies in the Piaçabuçu Environmental Protection Area (ICMBio), with use rules for the dunes and beach. Tarpon is a threatened species (Vulnerable): catch and release only. The Sergipe shore follows Sergipe's rules. Strong current and surf at the bar: don't head out in a small boat. Check local rules.
