The Pedra do Cavalo dam impounds the Paraguaçu River about 2 km from Cachoeira and São Félix, in the Recôncavo, forming a long, indented lake. The reservoir supplies much of the Salvador metropolitan region and also generates power. Recreational fishing targets peacock bass, introduced, in the arms with submerged timber and at the points; trahira in shallow coves with vegetation; tilapia and freshwater croaker throughout the lake. The surroundings are a state environmental protection area covering twelve municipalities, from Cachoeira to Feira de Santana.
best season
Warm months, October to March. In the spawning closure of the eastern basins (Nov 1 to Feb 28), only non-native species, such as peacock bass and tilapia.
Local rules: Spawning closure in the eastern basins from Nov 1 to Feb 28 (IN Ibama 196/2008): only non-native species and hybrids, up to 10 kg plus 1 specimen, and in rivers fishing from the bank only. Bahia also has a closed season in public açudes (reservoirs) from Dec 1 to Feb 28 (IN Ibama 129/2006): check with Inema whether it applies to the lake. Supply reservoir: keep away from the dam, the spillway and the water intake. The surroundings are the Pedra do Cavalo Lake state APA. Check local rules.

- About 120 km from Salvador, via BR-324 and BA-420, to Cachoeira and São Félix. Feira de Santana is the largest city nearby.
