camamu bay — camamu and maraú

Bay of islands, mangroves and reefs in southern Bahia, between Camamu and the Maraú Peninsula. Snook in the mangrove, jack and carapeba in the channels.

Camamu Bay indents the coast between Camamu, Maraú and Itacaré, with islands, mangroves, channels and reefs, and is a state environmental protection area. Artisanal fishing is strong in the region: a study by Unesp recorded snook, guaiúba and red snappers among the most sought-after fish, alongside shrimp and lobster. For the recreational angler, the target is snook in the mangrove roots and at channel mouths, with artificial lures or live shrimp; jack, carapeba and mullet in the channels and at the bar; guaiúba and mackerel outside the bay. Barra Grande, at the tip of the Maraú Peninsula, is the most used tourist base.
