tucuruí lake
One of the largest hydroelectric lakes in the country, with more than a thousand islands. A reference for big blue peacock bass.
The Tucuruí hydroelectric lake flooded the Tocantins River and created an archipelago of more than a thousand islands. Clear water, rock beds, island points and dead-tree stands. Blue peacock bass is the target, with big fish and strong fights; yellow peacock bass show up in numbers. The pescada-do-piauí (Piauí croaker) bites on bottom jigs. Payara and apapá hunt in the current near the islands. Fishing is from a boat, casting with surface lures, mid-water and jigs. Regional tournaments are held in low water.
best season
Lake dropping, August to December. Islands and rock beds appear and peacock bass concentrate.
Local rules: The lake has a mosaic of protected areas (RDS Alcobaça, RDS Pucuruí-Ararão and APA) with fishing zoning. The dam's safety zone is off-limits. Spawning closure (piracema) in the Tocantins basin. Check local rules.
