marajó island — soure
Estuary fishing at the mouth of the Amazon, with camurupim, acoupa weakfish and snook on beaches, channels and mangroves.
Soure is on the east coast of Marajó, facing the Bay of Marajó. The water mixes river and sea depending on the season. In the dry season salinity rises and acoupa weakfish, snook, crevalle jack and sororoca come in on the beaches and river mouths. Camurupim show up rolling in the channels and mangrove creeks. Boat fishing with natural bait and mid-water artificials, and beach fishing on the incoming tide. The strong tide rules: plan each trip around the tide table.
best season
Amazon summer, August to December. Less rain, saltier and clearer water on the coast.
Local rules: The Soure Marine Extractive Reserve regulates fishing along the municipality's coast. Respect community agreements. Check local rules. Camurupim is a threatened species (Vulnerable): catch and release only, preferably without lifting the fish out of the water; capture, retention and transport are prohibited.
