The Promissão hydroelectric plant's dam forms a long lake on the Tietê River, starting just below the Ibitinga dam and running to Promissão, with a lock on the Tietê-Paraná waterway. Borborema, in the upper part of the lake, has more than 30 km of shoreline, Praia do Juqueta, and thousands of rental units in fishing cabins and summer homes; the city government names croaker, tilapia and peacock bass as the main fish. Croaker, introduced into the Tietê, also supports the commercial fishing on the lake. On the middle Tietê reservoirs, trahira and mandi complete the catch, from a boat or from the bank. Downstream, Sabino has a municipal beach with a fishing pier and landing, and a ferry links the town to Sales.

March to October, outside the spawning closure. Nov 1 to Feb 28, on the lake, only non-native species, such as croaker, peacock bass and tilapia.

Local rules: Spawning closure (piracema) in the Paraná basin from Nov 1 to Feb 28 (IN Ibama 25/2009): in the lake, only non-native species, up to 10 kg plus 1 specimen; fishing is banned within 1,500 m of the dam and the lock, within 500 m of confluences and in the marginal lagoons, and aquatic animals may not be used as bait (except farmed live fish, with a note). In São Paulo, fishing is banned where it disturbs bathers during vacations and holidays (state Law 11.165/2002), which applies to the small beaches. Check local rules.

tip

Early in the morning and late in the afternoon, look for peacock bass at the points and in shallow submerged timber with topwater lures; at midday, croaker responds better to jigs and natural bait on the bottom of the channels.
