Barra Bonita sits by the dam and lock that open the Tietê-Paraná waterway, with a waterfront, boat tours and the twin city of Igaraçu do Tietê across the river. The lake above the dam is reservoir fishing: croaker (pescada-do-piauí) in the channels, peacock bass at the points and submerged timber, tilapia and trahira along the shallow banks, and curimbatá, piau and mandi at chum. It is boat and bank fishing, close to large inland cities.

Autumn and early spring. During the spawning closure (piracema, Nov 1 to Feb 28), only non-native species in the reservoirs, such as croaker, peacock bass and tilapia.

Local rules: Spawning closure (piracema) in the Paraná basin, Nov 1 to Feb 28 (IN Ibama 25/2009): in reservoirs, only non-native species, up to 10 kg plus 1 fish, and fishing within 1,500 m of the dam is prohibited. Don't fish in the navigation channel or near the lock, which has barge convoy traffic. Check local rules.

getting there: About 280 km from São Paulo via the Castello Branco Highway and state roads. Bauru and Ribeirão Preto have regional airports.
