água boa do univini river — caracaraí
White-sand, clear-water river in southern Roraima, famous for fly fishing for peacock bass. Fishing only with a licensed company.
The Água Boa do Univini is a tributary of the lower Rio Branco, with clear water and a sand bottom, which in the dry season forms beaches and shallow banks where you can see the fish before casting. That is why it became a reference for peacock bass fly fishing in Brazil. The açu and the borboleta are the targets, with aruanã, cachorra and bicuda along the edges. Roraima's law reserved the river for sport fishing by licensed companies, with catch and release and barbless hooks, and for riverside subsistence.

Dry season, November to February. In Roraima, March 1 to June 30 all rivers are under closed season.
Local rules: Lei RR 1.540/2021 (amended by Lei 2.112/2025): in the Água Boa do Univini and its tributaries, commercial and recreational peacock bass fishing is banned; only sport fishing by a company licensed by Femarh is allowed, with a maximum of 2 barbless hooks per bait, plus riverside subsistence fishing. Closed season in Roraima from March 1 to June 30 on all rivers (Portaria Ibama 48/2007). Check local rules.

In clear, shallow water, the cast has to be long and land softly. For fly, use a floating line, a 2.5 to 3 m leader and a bulky streamer.
