mamoré river — guajará-mirim
Muddy border river with Bolivia, land of big catfish. Clearwater tributaries hold peacock bass and scaled fish.
The Mamoré flows past Guajará-Mirim, with the Bolivian city of Guayaramerín on the opposite bank. It is a river of current, mud and catfish: dourada, piraíba, pirarara, jaú and surubim in the pools and at the mouth of the rapids. The tributaries on the Brazilian side, such as the Pacaás Novos, have clearer water and lakes with peacock bass, tambaqui and pirapitinga. Bottom fishing with natural bait and heavy gear in the channel, and casting in the lakes.
best season
Low water, June to October, with defined pools and isolated lakes.
Local rules: Border river: fish only in Brazilian waters. Indigenous lands and the Pacaás Novos National Park in the region require authorization. Spawning closure (piracema) in the Amazon basin. Check local rules.
