Carolina sits on the Maranhão bank of the Tocantins, across from Filadélfia (TO), on a stretch that became a lake with the Estreito hydroelectric plant. The landscape is of plateaus, waterfalls and clear-water rivers, with Chapada das Mesas National Park beside the town. In the lake, blue peacock bass, native to the Tocantins, and yellow peacock bass hold at points, submerged timber and rocks; cachorra and bicuda in the current areas; pescada and piranha everywhere. It is a good destination for combining fishing and waterfalls.

Dry season, June to October. Tocantins piracema from Nov 1 to Feb 28.
Local rules: Tocantins piracema from Nov 1 to Feb 28 (IN Interministerial MPA/MMA 13/2011): amateur fishing only in reservoirs, with consumption on site. Chapada das Mesas National Park: strictly protected, fishing not permitted. The Tocantinense bank follows Tocantins rules, which prohibit transporting fish until 2029. Hydroelectric safety zones prohibited. Check local rules.
