The Parnaíba on the border with Maranhão, below the Boa Esperança dam. Bank and canoe fishing on Floriano's waterfront.

Floriano is on the right bank of the Parnaíba, facing Barão de Grajaú, in Maranhão. The town grew as a port for the steamboats that plied the river, and the waterfront even has a floating restaurant. Fishing is from the bank, by canoe and by boat along the waterfront and in the river's holes and sandbars: pescada do Piauí on the bottom, peacock bass at the piers, submerged timber and landing stages on the bank, trahira along vegetated edges. This stretch lies below the Boa Esperança dam, in Guadalupe, upstream.

Dry season, August to November, with the river low and sandbars exposed. Parnaíba basin spawning closure from Nov 15.

Local rules: Parnaíba basin spawning closure from Nov 15: the IN MMA 40/2005 text says it ends on Mar 16 and the Ibama table says Feb 16, so confirm the dates; during the period, recreational anglers only with line, rod or reel, up to 5 kg plus 1 specimen, and fishing is banned within 1,500 m of dams and waterfalls. The Parnaíba is a border river: the Maranhão bank follows Maranhão's rules. Check local rules.

getting there: About 240 km from Teresina via BR-343. Floriano has an airport.

Late in the afternoon, cast tight to the piers, submerged timber and landing stages on the waterfront with a mid-water lure for peacock bass; for pescada, natural bait on the bottom of the holes.
