argentine silverside

Odontesthes bonariensis

FreshwaterEstuary

One of the most sport-fished fish in Argentina. It schools in the Pampas lagoons and produces fine float-fishing days with lots of fish. In Brazil it lives in the lagoons of southern RS.

Also called: peixe-rei, pejerrey, peixe-rei-argentino

overview

who is the argentine silverside

Slender, silvery fish of the La Plata plains. It lives in schools in the mid-water of shallow lagoons, farm ponds, reservoirs and canals, in fresh to slightly brackish water. It eats zooplankton, insects and, when large, small fish. It spawns in spring, sticking its eggs to aquatic vegetation. In the lagoons of Buenos Aires province it is the target of a traditional fishery, done with a series of small floats and fine hooks, mostly in autumn and winter. It was carried to Chile and Lake Titicaca, where it established itself and supports an artisanal fishery, but it competes with native fish. In Brazil it occurs naturally in the Mirim Lagoon system in RS, where it is called peixe-rei. Its mouth is delicate: use light tackle and a gentle hookset.

fun facts

  • The Buenos Aires closed season from September to November coincides with spawning, when the fish stick their eggs to vegetation.
  • In Lake Titicaca, at 3,800 m above sea level, the introduced pejerrey became an artisanal fishery species.
  • Matures at 1 to 2 years and lives short: FishBase records a maximum age of 4 years.
how to recognize it

identification

Elongated, slender body, bluish to greenish-brown back and silvery flanks. A wide silver band, with a dark-blue upper edge, runs from the pectoral fin to the tail. Two small, separate dorsal fins, long anal fin, small protractile mouth. Other peixe-rei of the genus Odontesthes in RS and in the Patos Lagoon estuary look very similar; a reliable separation requires counting scales and rays.

Native to the La Plata plains: Pampas lagoons of Buenos Aires province, the lower Paraná, the Río de la Plata and Uruguay. In Brazil, lagoons of southern RS such as Mirim and Mangueira. Introduced and established in central Chile and Lake Titicaca (Peru and Bolivia).

Habitat: Shallow lagoons, farm ponds, reservoirs and canals of fresh to slightly brackish water. Schools in the mid-water and near the surface, along reed beds and vegetation banks.

best season

In the Pampas lagoons the best season is autumn and winter (March to August), with cold water and active schools. In spring the fish gather to spawn, and Buenos Aires province restricts fishing (see the rules). In hot summer, fishing drops off.

weather, water and behavior

what affects the argentine silverside
sensitivity The little bars show how much each factor affects this species. Five full: it feels it a lot.

cold and cold fronts

Likes cold water and handles winter well. The problem is summer heat, which shuts down activity.

atmospheric pressure

Stable pressure is best. When a cold front arrives there is usually good activity, and after it the school disappears for a day or two.

moon

Small effect.

rain

Light drizzle does not bother them; a storm muddies the shallow lagoon.

water level

A very low lagoon warms and clouds; stable level and clear water are ideal.

noise

Wary in shallow water. Avoid knocking the oars and anchor; chum and wait for the school to arrive.

wind

A light breeze that ripples the water helps and spreads the chum. Strong wind sinks the floats and makes the shallow lagoon impractical.

depth

Mid-water: set the floats between 30 cm and 1.5 m until you find the school.

  • curimbatá fillet (sábalo)

tip from an angler

Cast the float rig into the wind, chum nearby and adjust the depth until you find the school. The bite is light: wait for the float to go under and set the hook gently with the line taut.

rules for the argentine silverside

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.
Conservation: Outside its native range (Chile, Lake Titicaca) it is an introduced species and competes with native fish.

Buenos Aires (AR): pejerrey closed season from Sep 1 to Nov 30

Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only, with a daily bag limit01/09 to 30/11

Across Buenos Aires province, from Sep 1 to Nov 30, sport fishing for pejerrey is allowed only on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays (also Fridays at Chasicó, Cochicó and Del Monte lagoons), within the daily bag limit per angler: 30 fish at Chasicó, 20 at Cochicó and Hinojo Grande, 15 in the listed lagoons and in rivers, streams and canals, and 10 in the other lagoons. Competitions and commercial fishing in inland waters are banned during this period. The closed season renews automatically every year.

Allowed: Recreational fishing from a boat or from shore, with a single hook, one gear per angler, up to 5 kg.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

Fragile fish: unhook it in the water, without squeezing it and without drying your hands. A barbless hook helps. If you are going to release it, don't leave it in the bucket.

in the kitchen

White, delicate flesh, highly valued. Classic milanesa-style, fried, escabeche or Provençal-style.
