guaíba lake — itapuã, viamão
Where the Guaíba meets the Laguna dos Patos, next to Itapuã State Park. Trahira, jundiá, silverside, piava and croaker.
Itapuã is at the far south of the Guaíba, in Viamão, where the lake meets the Laguna dos Patos; the lighthouse, completed in 1860, marks that meeting. Much of the shore belongs to Itapuã State Park, with hills, freshwater beaches and inland lagoons. According to the park's management plan, the waters of the Guaíba and the surrounding lagoon have commercial and sport fishing aimed at surubim, jundiá, trahira, silverside, piava, biru, catfish, croaker and flounder. Itapuã Village, next to the park, has since 1923 gathered most of the fishers of the Z-4 colony. The lake is wide and wind-exposed: bottom fishing with natural bait yields jundiá, piava and surubim, and trahira stays along the vegetated banks.
