The white bass is a freshwater fish of the family Moronidae, reaching 45 cm and weighing up to 3.1 kg. It lives in lakes, ponds and pools of small to large rivers, in temperate water, between 12 and 32 degrees, and down to 13 m deep. It has sport value and is caught for subsistence.

how to recognize it

identification

Fusiform, long-bodied fish with two dorsal fins, the front one spiny, a trait of the family Moronidae. It lives in lakes, ponds and river pools, in shallow waters. The name refers to the light tone of the body. To tell it apart from the yellow bass, of the same genus and region, look at the body tone, which in this species is light and silvery.

what the law says

rules for the white bass

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.

We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

Harmless fish. Hold it with a wet hand and return it quickly to the water. As it is exotic in Mexico, do not release it in waters where it does not occur.

in the kitchen

It is caught for subsistence, that is, for the consumption of the people who catch it.
