mouth of the jaguaribe river — fortim
Where the Jaguaribe meets the sea, between Fortim and Aracati, on Ceará's east coast. Snook in the mangrove and tarpon at the bar.
The Jaguaribe River, which crosses Ceará and passes the Orós and Castanhão açudes, ends in a mangrove estuary between Fortim and Aracati, on the east coast. At the mouth of the bar, with deep channels and strong current, tarpon and jack hunt on the rising tide; in the mangrove channels and at the bridge pilings, snook and carapeba; mullet and ubarana on the sandbars at the mouth. Fishing is from a boat, with plugs and natural bait, and there are ramps in Fortim and Aracati. Canoa Quebrada, near the mouth, concentrates the region's tourist infrastructure.
best season
September to March, with clearer water and active snook; the rising tide is the best time.
Local rules: Tarpon is a threatened species (Vulnerable): catch and release only, preferably without lifting the fish out of the water. Grouper: catch banned. Strong current at the bar, especially at low tide: don't fish alone in rough seas. Check local rules.
