cananéia and ilha comprida
Preserved Lagamar, with snook, caranha and weakfish in mangrove channels. One of the best estuaries in the South and Southeast.
Cananéia sits in the Lagamar estuarine complex, between Mar Pequeno, Ilha Comprida and Ilha do Cardoso. It's a network of preserved channels, gamboas and mangroves. Swordspine snook and fat snook at gamboa mouths and rocks, caranha in mangrove burrows, weakfish and croaker on the channel bottoms. On Ilha Comprida, an open-sea beach with betara and flounder. Boat fishing with artificial lures and live bait, almost always guided by the tide.
best season
Warm water, October to April, for snook and caranha. In winter, croaker and weakfish.
Local rules: Cananéia-Iguape-Peruíbe APA and Ilha do Cardoso State Park: rules by zone. Goliath grouper (mero), common in the estuary, has catch banned nationwide. Caranha may have a special rule by conservation status. Check local rules.
