barra do ribeira — iguape
The mouth of the Ribeira de Iguape River, in the caiçara village of Barra do Ribeira. Snook above all, with pompano, croaker, weakfish and crevalle jack.
The Ribeira de Iguape River reaches the sea at Barra do Ribeira, a fishing village north of Iguape, at the start of the Iguape, Cananéia and Ilha Comprida estuarine complex. Since the 19th century, the Valo Grande canal has diverted part of the river to the Mar Pequeno, next to the town, changing the water and bottom of the entire estuary. At Barra do Ribeira, snook is the fish most sought by sport anglers, ahead of pompano, catfish, croaker, weakfish and crevalle jack. Caiçara fishers work as pilot-guides and sell live bait: white shrimp, emborê, corrupto, moçorongo, tuvira and manjuba. Unesp researchers have followed the snook of the complex for years, with thousands of tagged fish.
