itanhaém river — itanhaém
Mangrove estuary an hour and a half from São Paulo. Robalo-flecha and peva in the arms of the Itanhaém River.
The Itanhaém River forms where the Preto and Branco rivers meet and reaches the sea in the city center, after passing through mangroves and river arms. It is one of the most sought-after snook estuaries on São Paulo's south coast: peva and flecha stay in the submerged timber, pilings and channel mouths, and pescada-amarela and croaker in the pools. Dog snapper (caranha) appear in stretches with rock and timber. Fishing from a small boat, kayak or the bank, with live shrimp and artificial lures.
best season
Warm months, October to April, with snook active in the river. In winter fishing slows down, but mullet and croaker show up.
Local rules: Robalo-flecha minimum 50 cm and peva 30 cm in the Southeast (IN MMA 53/2005). Dog snapper (caranha) is a threatened species (Vulnerable): catch and release only. From Mar 15 to Aug 15, IN Ibama 171/2008 bans fishing at the estuary-lagoon mouths of the Southeast and South: check whether the river bar falls under the rule. The city's coast lies in the Litoral Centro Marine Environmental Protection Area. Check local rules.
