samuel lake — candeias do jamari

Lake behind the Samuel dam, on the Jamari River, near Porto Velho. Part of the lake lies within an ecological station, where fishing is not allowed.

forecast for here see on the map

The Samuel dam impounded the Jamari River, a tributary of the Madeira, about 50 km from Porto Velho. Because the valley had little drop, long dikes had to be built on both banks to form the lake. Part of the reservoir and of the forest to the east lies within the Samuel Ecological Station, a state reserve created to offset the impact of the works. Outside it, fishing is that of an Amazonian dam lake, with pescada-do-piauí, trahira and piranhas among submerged logs and timber.
