sobradinho lake
One of the largest artificial lakes in the world by area, in the Bahia backlands. Peacock bass, croaker and tilapia in warm water.
Sobradinho Lake spreads the São Francisco over hundreds of kilometers of backlands. Warm water all year, shallow banks, dead-tree stands and islands. The Piauí croaker (pescada-do-piauí), the backlands croaker, is abundant and bites on jigs and natural bait. Peacock bass, introduced, occupy the logs and points. Tilapia and trahira are everywhere. Surubim show up in the river channel and below the dam. Strong, steady wind is the rule on the lake: plan fishing for the calmer hours.
best season
Warmest and driest months, September to January. Low lake concentrates fish.
Local rules: Spawning closure (piracema) in the São Francisco basin (usually Nov 1 to Feb 28), with its own rules for reservoirs. The dam and lock safety zone is off-limits. Check local rules.
