porto de galinhas and southern pernambuco coast
Reefs, natural pools and bottom fishing on Pernambuco's south coast, down to Tamandaré and the Costa dos Corais.
Porto de Galinhas is famous for the natural pools that reefs form at low tide. Beyond the reefs, boat fishing targets cubera snapper (cioba), mutton snapper (guaiuba), lane snapper (ariacó) and dentão over rock and gravel bottoms, and king mackerel, barracuda and crevalle jack on trolling. Further south, Tamandaré and São José da Coroa Grande lie in the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protection Area, where a closed area protects the reefs. In the region's estuaries, such as the Formoso River, there is snook.
best season
September to March, the dry season, with calmer seas and clear water.
Local rules: The natural pools are controlled visitor areas: don't fish or walk on the reefs. In the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protection Area, the closed area at Tamandaré is off-limits to all fishing. Pernambuco's coast has a history of shark incidents: follow the Cemit warnings and don't clean fish in the water. Goliath grouper: harvest prohibited. Check local rules.
