Porto Seguro and Santa Cruz Cabrália have a coast of reefs, sandbanks and rivers that reach the sea, such as the Buranhém and João de Tiba. Boat fishing targets dentão, cubera snapper (cioba), mutton snapper (guaiuba) and lane snapper (ariacó) over rock bottoms outside the reefs, and king mackerel, barracuda and mahi-mahi on trolling further out. Snook in the estuaries. The best-known reefs, such as Recife de Fora in Porto Seguro and Coroa Alta in Cabrália, are municipal marine parks, open to visitors only.

Local rules: Recife de Fora Municipal Marine Natural Park (Parque Natural Municipal Marinho do Recife de Fora) is a full-protection unit: don't fish or anchor on the reefs. Snook closed season in Bahia, May 15 to Jul 31, and closed season for caranha (dog snapper), sirigado and badejo, Aug 1 to Sep 30. Goliath grouper: harvest prohibited. Check local rules with the city hall.

getting there: Porto Seguro airport, with flights from several state capitals. Santa Cruz Cabrália is about 25 km away via the BR-367.

Fish the isolated rock pinnacles outside the reef line: big dentão hold on small rocks, away from the most heavily fished spots.
