abrolhos and caravelas

The largest coral bank in the South Atlantic, with reef fishing outside the park and snook in the Caravelas estuary.

Caravelas is the base for the Abrolhos Bank, a wide, shallow platform with shoals and coral heads (chapeirões). Outside the Marine National Park, bottom fishing and trolling produce dentão, cioba, guaiúba, badejo, olho-de-boi and cavala. In the Caravelas estuary and mangroves, snook and camurupim. Trips to the bank are long and depend on the sea. From July to November, humpback whales occupy the region and share the space with boats.
