overview

who is the timboré

A piau of the La Plata basin (Paraná, Paraguay and Uruguay), with a projecting snout that gives its scientific name (nasutus, big-nosed). It eats mostly plants and algae, and pairs spawn in dense vegetation. It is common in upper Paraná reservoirs, where it bites on corn and dough chum with cooked corn, and it has the federal minimum size for the Paraná basin. Common names vary a lot: in Minas, taguara and piau-de-cheiro; in São Paulo and Paraná, timboré, chimboré or timburé. In Mato Grosso, the chimburé in the state rule is another species (Schizodon borellii).

fun facts

  • In Minas Gerais, the official IEF table groups two species of the genus under the name taguara: S. nasutus and S. knerii.
  • Nasutus means big-nosed.
