bertioga channel — bertioga

Mangrove channel between Bertioga and Guarujá, connected to the Santos estuary. Common snook and fat snook in the fallen branches and gamboas, with weakfish and croaker.

The Bertioga Channel separates Santo Amaro Island, in Guarujá, from the mainland and links the Bertioga bar to the Santos estuary, with mangroves, gamboas and the Itapanhaú River mouth next to the city. It is a traditional destination for amateur anglers from São Paulo, and snook rules: in a survey of 164 amateur anglers on the channel, common snook and fat snook were cited by almost everyone, followed by yellow, white and cambuçu weakfish, catfish, croaker, cutlassfish, parati, betara and crevalle jack. The fallen branches and gamboas on the channel bottom are fished on the rising tide, and the banks on the falling tide. Live shrimp, sold by local fishers and marinas, is the bait for most anglers, but artificial lures are also widely used. The channel hosts snook tournaments with boats and kayaks.

Summer and spring see the most trips, and April was the month most cited by channel anglers; the Fishing Institute points to snook catch peaks in November and December.

Local rules: Minimum sizes in the Southeast (IN MMA 53/2005): common snook 50 cm, fat snook 30 cm, croaker 25 cm, cutlassfish 70 cm. The channel and its mangroves are in the Marine Environmental Protection Area of the Central Coast (state decree 53.526/2008), which guarantees amateur fishing and bans fishing with air compressors.
