cassino beach to chuí — surfcasting

About 220 km of continuous beach to Barra do Chuí. Surfcasting for croaker, papa-terra and pompano.

From Cassino to Barra do Chuí, about 220 km of straight beach with no towns in between. It's the kingdom of Gaúcho surfcasting. Croaker, papa-terra and pompano are the targets, and bluefish pass in autumn and spring. Miraguaia comes in during spring, but it's a threatened species with catch banned: if you hook one, release it right away. Fishing is channel fishing: find the deep trough between the sandbanks. You reach it by 4x4 along the beach itself, watching the tide and the washouts that cut through the sand.

Spring and summer, October to March, with croaker, papa-terra and pompano in the beach channels.

Local rules: Driving on the beach requires attention to the tide and to the sangradouros (outflow channels). The Taim Ecological Station is nearby: fishing is prohibited inside it. Miraguaia is a threatened species with catch prohibited: do not target it and, if you hook one by accident, release it immediately. Check the local rules.

getting there: Rio Grande and Cassino Beach by paved road. To the south, only along the beach with a 4x4 vehicle, or via the BR-471 to Santa Vitória do Palmar and Chuí.
facilities: Hotels and inns in Cassino, in Santa Vitória do Palmar and in Chuí. The beach has no facilities in between: bring water, fuel and a way to call for help.

For croaker and papa-terra: shrimp, corrupto or tatuí on a small hook and a grip-style sinker that holds in the channel.
