angra dos reis and ilha grande
Sheltered bay with hundreds of islands and rocky shores. Snook in the mangroves and grouper on the rocks.
Ilha Grande Bay has hundreds of islands, rocky shores, ledges and mangroves. Sheltered water makes fishing possible almost any time. Snook at river mouths and mangroves, grouper on the rocks, crevalle jack and olhete on the ledges, sororoca and cutlassfish (pez sable) in the bay. Bluefish in winter, near the outer islands. Boat fishing with casting and jigs, and natural bait on the bottom. Many islands are protected areas: knowing where you can fish is part of the fishing.
best season
Autumn and spring are the most complete seasons. Bluefish in winter, snook more active with warm water.
Local rules: Tamoios Ecological Station: fishing banned around the station's islands and their marine surroundings. Ilha Grande State Park and Praia do Sul Biological Reserve have restrictions. Goliath grouper (mero): catch banned nationwide. Check local rules.
