ubatuba — são paulo's north coast
Dozens of beaches, islands and rocky shores between the mountains and the sea. Snook in the rivers and on rocky shores, olhete and bluefish around the islands.
Ubatuba has an indented coast, with coves, islands and rivers that run down from the Serra do Mar. Rocky-shore fishing yields snook, crevalle jack and sororoca; around islands and ledges, from a boat, olhete, bluefish and grouper on jigs and live bait; in the rivers and at channel mouths, robalo-flecha and peva. In winter, cutlassfish come into the bays. Much of the coast lies in the APA Marinha do Litoral Norte, and some islands are full-protection areas.
best season
Autumn and winter for bluefish, olhete and cutlassfish; spring and autumn for snook on rocky shores and in rivers. Grouper closed season, Nov 1 to Feb 28.

tip
Rocky-shore snook in Ubatuba feed in the breaking surf at dawn: light mid-water lures, casts tight to the rock and a slow retrieve.
