florianópolis — bays and rocky shores of the island
Island of calm bays, lagoons and rocky shores. Snook in the bays, mullet and bluefish in winter, beach fishing from north to south.
Florianópolis packs very different fisheries into one place: the North and South bays, calm and lined with mangroves, for snook, croaker and flounder; the eastern and southern rocky shores, for bluefish and pompano; the surf beaches for surf casting; and Lagoa da Conceição. In winter, the mullet run mobilizes the island's fishing communities with beach seine nets, an Azorean tradition. To the north lies the Reserva Biológica Marinha do Arvoredo, closed to fishing.
best season
Autumn and winter, with the mullet run (May to July) and bluefish; spring for snook in the bays. Bluefish closed season in the South, Dec 1 to Mar 31.
Local rules: During the mullet run, May 1 to Jul 10, Municipal Law 10.020/2016 regulates surfing and gives priority to artisanal fishing on flagged beaches: respect the ranchos (fishing shacks) and the lookouts. Arvoredo Marine Biological Reserve: fishing prohibited. In the South Bay, the Pirajubaé Extractive Reserve has use rules. Bluefish closed season in the South, Dec 1 to Mar 31; mullet minimum size 35 cm. Check local rules.
