ilhabela and são sebastião channel
Deep channel and oceanic islands close to shore. Olhete and bluefish in winter, mahi-mahi in summer.
The São Sebastião Channel separates Ilhabela from the mainland and is deep, with strong current. Rocky shores, ledges and outer islands, such as Búzios and Vitória, are within boat reach. Olhete and bluefish are the winter targets, with jigs and trolling. Grouper on the rocks, crevalle jack on the ledges, snook on the mainland beaches and rivers. In summer, mahi-mahi farther out. The channel has traffic from the port's ships and the oil terminal: extra care needed.
best season
Winter, May to September, for olhete and bluefish. Mahi-mahi in summer, farther offshore.
Local rules: The North Coast Marine APA has rules by zone. Respect anchoring areas and ship maneuvering in the channel. Goliath grouper (mero): catch banned nationwide. Check local rules.
